Background Pagination in Word

When formatting a long document, every time I make a
change Word repaginates the whole document, which makes
it very time consuming. I've gone into tools and
eliminated background pagination, so what is causing this?

Hi, Seriously,

Work only in Normal view (or possibly in Outline view), with background
pagination turned off, as long as possible. As soon as you switch to Page
Layout view, Word will automatically turn on background pagination -- that
view isn't possible without it.
