Background Repagination going on and off

OK, this one has been bothering me for a while: I've notice that when I
am working in Word, periodically, I'll look down to the bottom of the
screen and notice that it is not repaginating the document
automatically. I go to "Preferences/General" and check the "Background
Repagination" box, and everything works fine. But then, in another
session, I open another document, notice the same thing, and voila, the
"Background Repagination" box is once again unchecked. So I check it
again, and so on.

My suspicion here is that his has something to do with the documents I
am opening; about six months ago (after getting this new MacBook Pro) I
did a mass migration from an old OS9 box, and I assume that whenever I
open an older Word (6.0) document, it is somehow resetting the
preferences for the Normal template. So let's say I open a new doc in
Word, check the "Background Repag." box in Prefs, work, shut it down,
etc., and then open up an older doc in another session, and it unchecks
the preferences box. At this point, my old and new docs are thoroughly
integrated, so there is no way to tell which ones will trigger this
behavior and which ones won't.

So my question is, how can I "force" Word to apply that preference to
all documents it opens? Or how can I apply a single version of the
Normal template to all docs?

Of course, I could be totally off-base on all of this. If you have any
other suggestions, I'm all ears. Thanks in advance.

Not sure why you posted this in the PowerPoint group - I think the "Wordies"
will have more insights on the issue so I have taken the liberty of posting
it there. Check for replies in:
