Backgrounds and Themes for Normal View/emailing documents

Calling all experts! For Office Word 2003:
I love the backgrounds and themes available for dressing up documents.

1.) Why can they only be seen in Print Layout view and used for printing?
The snapshot of the Print Preview would work lovely.
I am using them for documents that I want to send out as email attachments.
I have had some success converting the docs to pdfs, but the transfer is not
always accurate.

Any suggestions?
Thanks muchly.

Normal view is for speedy text editing, it will never show you anything
except inline graphic objects (no shapes, no background pictures, etc.).

Keep in mind that unless you know exactly your recipient's email setup
(which, unless it is in-house, usually you don't ...), it's pretty hard
to guess what happens when you send them emails containing anything else
than text. Formatting might be stripped or not.

If you really need to send them something other than text, your best bet
is to use an attachment. A PDF would be a natural choice then.
