Backing out from Entourage Mac 2004 to Entourage Mac X

Hi,

I have a client who has just bought a few G5 iMacs with OS X 10.4.2 and
Office 2004. They are in an office with a Xserve running 104.2. server.

No one is running home drictories or NAV.

The older machines in the office running either 10.4.2 or 10.3.9 and
Office X have no issues, but the Office 2004 machines have problems
saving word documents (various errors about not enough memory, too many
documents open, lost connection to the server - all spurious).

Also Office 2004 is not executing common Autotext entries like Office X

I have enough copies of Office X to backout from Office 2004 to Office
X but I'm concerned about the Entourage 2004 database files.

Are they compatible with Office X (once the identities folder is
renamed) or is some conversion process required or am I unable to roll
back to Office X?

Regards,

Mark

No, they are not compatible. You will have to export all your data and
import them into a new vX database.

Try posting more details of your problems (to the appropriate groups) and we
may be able to get those fixed rather than downgrade - they are not typical
by any means.

Barry,

Thanks, I have (to the Word list) and it suggested that I post the
Entourafe question here.

So looks like I (and the client) am stuck - another great "leap
forward" form Micro$.

But you haven't posted details about the problems you are seeing - they may
be solvable!

No, you're not stuck. There are two ways of getting your Entourage data out
of Entourage 2004 and back into X.

1.) Drag items out of to make files, and then into X. These are all
compatible:

mail folders - drag out to make .mbox files, one at a time
individual email messages - drag out to make .eml files (no more than
500 or so at a time)
contacts - drag out to make .vcf files (no more than 199 at a time)
calendar events - drag out from All Events mail view (no more than 199
at a time)
tasks - drag out from Tasks List (no more than 199 at a time)
notes - drag out from Notes view (no more than 199 at a time)

The number limitations are real - especially for contacts. You can use
shift-click on two items in a list to select all the items in between, and
at bottom left of the window you'll see how many you've selected. Use
shift-click again to adjust the number if need be.

When you've got all your items exported to files, quit Entourage 2004, open
Entourage X, and drag tem in, again with the same number limitations at a
time.

Note that using this method you will NOT preserve categories or links, and
some of the more obscure contact fields may be lost. Built-in mail folders
like "Inbox", "Sent Items" will import to X as separate folders ("Inbox 1",
etc.) and you'll have to move messages around afterwards. Sent mail messages
appear as if they are received messages (you can't reply to them), and the
"Received" date is wrong (date you import into X), tags (icons) like
"Replied to", "Forwarded", etc. are missing.

2) Or you can use my shareware scripts "Export-Import Entourage X" to do the
whole thing for you. One script per item type. All categories are preserved.
(Not projects, since they don't exist in X, of course.) Using "Messages"
Export and Import (rather than "Folders") you can preserve all sent message
format, Received date, "Replied To", etc. tags and icons - in effect, an
exact reconstruction except for links. You can get the scripts at

Yes I did!

I refer you to the Post entitled "Various File Save error messages with
Word 2004 and Tiger (10.4.2) Server" posted on 18/8/05 at 1411.

But to save you the effort:

Hi,

One of my clients recently took delivery of some G5 iMacs (running
10.4.2 client) and copies of Office 2004.

They are all now having problems saving files to the 10.4.2 Server (G5
Xserve).

The error messages are various ("not enough memory", "too many files
open", lost connection" ...).

The people with older Macs running 10.3.9 and Office X (fully patched)
do not suffer these problems.

There are no file access permission issues that I know of (at least via

the  "Workgroup Manager".

Also several macro's (including AutoText entries) which worked under
Office X no longer appear to do so.

1. Any suggestions for a work around / fix ?

2. If we back out to Office X (have at least one unused copy) how do I
convert the Entourage 2004 database files to work with Entourage X ?

and part of a response by Beth Rosengard:

Hi Mark,

This is (unfortunately) a common problem.  Something changed in Tiger
that
causes this problem in Word.  Both Apple and Microsoft are aware of the

problem and are looking for solutions.  I would hope that an update
will
