I know that we can sync with another computer for instance, but pardon my
ignorance here, can I just sync with my portable hard drive on which I keep
all my backups?

Let me know! Thanks!

Carmen,
Erik Gulbrandsen has already given you the answer.
As his explantion might have been not too understable, however (sorry,
Erik), let me try to add:

1.) Automatical synchronization is one of the main features of ON.
The way it is done, makes ON 2007 one of the most advanced
applications in as far as using data on multiple devices is
concernded.

2.) The main thing is:
Do not synch *files* (notebooks) on two devices the way normally
synchronization is done (on file-to-fiole basis).
Let ON do the synchronization.
The main thing is:
One does not have any notebook files on the portable device (laptop)
but uses the notebooks stored on the "main" computer (the desktop PC,
normally).

3.) The way this works:
a) Do not keep/store *any* notebook-file on your portable device.
If you you have any of those files on your notebook (f.e.) remove them
there.

b) In ON on the portable device open the notbooks stored on the
desktop PC over the network.
ON then creates a "cache" locally (on the laptop) which holds all of
the data.

c) As long as the devices are connected (via LAN or WLAN), all changes
are synched automatically.

d) If the devices get dis-connected, one works on each device
individually/separately (on the desktop PC with the *file* stored
there, on the laptop in its cache).

e) Once the devices will be re-connetced, ON will *automatically*
synch the laptop's cache with the data on the desktop.

That's basically all.
