Backing up Outlook 2003

Hello All,

I want to try backing up the .pst file in Outlook 2003. I have downloaded the "Outlook Personal Folders Backup Tool" from Microsoft's web page. I have installed it numerous times and I cannot find the "Backup" button in the File menu as instructed. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a few times, following the simple instructions included but still no button for Backup.

I am running XP Pro and have a licenced version of Office 2003. Thanks for the help

Go to Tools-> Options-> tab Other-> button Advanced Options...-> button COM
Add-Ins and make sure the add-in is checked. If it's not listed press Add
and locate outbak.dll. It should be listed in the folder where you installed
Office.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled several times...searched my hard drive for the
outbak.dll. It's not to be found! Any other suggestions? TIA

Office.

This is how I backup Outlook 2003, hope it will work for you?

Locate Outlook.pst, by following the example below:

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME\Local
Settings\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook

Make sure you follow the above and don't miss any of the folders, it's
really easy to get in the wrong one.

Now drag the Outlook file to the CD burner and write it to the CD.

This is how I backup Outlook 2003, hope it will work for you?

Strange thing was I had done a search earlier and couldn't find it.

That is when you updated your Office version indeed; it leaves the add-ins

Make sure that you are attempting to install the correct version of the
Outlook Personal Folders Backup tool - the one for Office 2000 does not
work with Office 2003

The article is great; however, my situation is a bit different.

I originally installed the backup add-in logged on as a different user. Now
with my current profile, the add-in will not install, nor uninstall.

When I go to install, it tells me it is already installed and can only be
uninstalled via Control Panel\Add Remove Programs. However, Add\Remove
Programs does not list the add-in; therefore, I am stuck in limbo.

Renaming extend.dat and outcmd.dat did not work for me. Is a registry hack
in order?

Probably not needed. The file containing the backup add-in is "outbak.dll"
and should be in either %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office10\Addins or
%ProgramFIles%|Microsoft Office\Office11\Addins. Locate it with Windows
Explorer so you know which it is in. Then go into your Add-in manager in
Outlook by clicking Tools>Options>Other>Advanced Options>Com Add-Ins. Click
Add. Browse to the folder you found above, select "outbak.dll" and click
OK. The backup add-in should now appear and the Backup command should
appear in the File menu.

I followed the oyur recommendations precisely, except that I don't have a CD
Drive,. Dragged the Outlook Folder to an 8 gig Flash Drive, but got this
message: " Cannot copy Outlook. The process cannot access the file because
another process has locked a portion of the file." 'What Process? and what
File? And what might be the 'Other Process"?

Outlook, presumably - you need to close Outlook, *before* you copy the
file, or Outlook will hold it locked to read and write to it.
