Backing up the Word Custom Dictionary

Is there a way to back up the dictionary of all the words I have added?
Everytime I have to reformat my computer I lose all the many words (and
auto-corrects) that I have created, and have to start again.

Thanks - Sally

In Word 2003 or earlier, go to Tools > Options > Spelling & Grammar > Custom
Dictionaries. In Word 2007, the same dialog is at Office button > Word Options >
Proofing > Custom Dictionaries. The dialog shows the path to the custom
dictionary (if there are more than one, select each in turn to see its path).

The default path the hidden folder %appdata%\Microsoft\Proof\Custom.dic. Simply
copy that file to the backup location.

The AutoCorrect entries are something else entirely -- not connected to the
custom dictionary at all. If you have Word 2003 or earlier, download the
AutoCorrect backup template from
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/ExportAutocorrect.htm. If it's Word
2007, an updated version of the template is at
