Backslash & quote characters are being auto replaced by an accente

At work the Mac I use has been acting strange. Any time I try to use a quote
or backslash they are automatically defaulted to an e character with an
accent mark over it. I discovered if I hold the option key down with the
backslash I can override the accented e key but it will not work with the
quote marks and defaults back to the accented e character. The computer is
used by others in the office so I can not figure out what was done to create
this character default or how to return to the original characters. HELP!

Hi btb -

You might take a look at Tools>AutoCorrect first & see if someone has added
them as AC entries. If not it would seem the Word or OS language/keyboard
settings have been changed. Does this happen in programs other than Word?
Which versions of Word & OS are you using?
