Backspace does not remove selected text

When I select a block of text then press backspace,
nothing happens. It should delete the text.

Troubleshooting info:
- This problem does NOT occcur when running "winword /a"
- The problem DOES occur when using the support template,
SUPPORT.DOT
- The problem is not solved by using any of the tools in
the support template
- The problem is not solved by uninstalling Office and
reinstalling it
- The problem still occurs even when I have no add-ins or
other macros loaded.

Any ideas?

On the Edit tab of Tools | Options, be sure that "Typing replaces selection"
is checked. Word considers backspacing "typing."
