Backspace does not work when text highlighted

I've started getting a problem that backspace does work when I've highlighted
text in word, only delete will work. Also, typing does not replace
highlighted text. I have also found that I tend to have a process running in
the background "winword.exe" a lot of the time and if it is running and I try
to shut down windows appear saying I am trying to make changes to the global
template, do I want to save etc. These problems started at the same time.
Could it be a Macro virus? What can I do to solve both/either problem. Virus
scanning with AVG has yielded nothing. Any help much appreciated!

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing replaces
selection" box.

brilliant! any ideas with the template problem? I think that whatever changed
the typing setting (because it wasn't me - I didn't know it was there to turn
it off!) has something to do with the "Normal.dot" template problem.

Thank you very much!

winword.exe is the program file that runs Microsoft Word. Ordinarily,
winword.exe would not be a running process if Word is closed. But
selecting Word as the default email editor in Outlook can cause
winword.exe to run in the background.

Regarding the prompt to save the normal.dot template... if you are using
Symantec/Norton AntiVirus, disable the Office Plugin that comes with it.
See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office
programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more info.
