backspace problem

Before today I was able to highlight my docuemnt as a
whole, or just a few lines and press the backspace key to
delete the highlighted parts but I am not able to do this
anymore. I highlight what I want deleted, but when I press
the backspace key, nothing happens. Anybody know how to
change this?

Hi,

I've got a different backspace problem. In some
documents...legacy stuff...there are a number of "spots"
that I cannot backspace past. There are other spots I
can't forward-delete past. Multiple presses of the key
simply leave the cursor immediately after or immediately
before the character (often a "space") that I want to
delete.

The grammer checker seems to think that the word most
associated with these spots should be capitalized as the
first word in a sentence or paragraph.

Sometimes the "other delete" key...forward or
backward...will remove the apparently offending character.
Sometimes it won't. I can move the cursor past the
blockage using the arrow keys. I can select the character
on either side of the blockage and delete that. Sometimes
removing the character that way works. Sometimes it
doesn't.

I've tried selecting a chunk of text that runs from well
before the blockage to well after it, deleting all of it,
and retyping the material. Sometimes that works. Sometimes
it doesn't.

I've tried all the "reveal" steps...no joy. I've also
tried the Microsoft knowledge base. Less joy.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Barney

I've seen this phenomenon with old WordPerfect documents imported into Word.

Here are two things to try:

1. Select some text starting a few characters before the problem and ending a few characters after the problem. Edit > Cut. Edit >
Paste Special and choose Unformatted Text.

2. Press Alt-F9. This should expose all field codes. Does it expose some strange-looking fields in the problem areas? When Word
imports a WordPerfect file it can insert fields that look like { PRIVATE }. These are supposed to store WP-specific information to
enable round-tripping. I've never found the round-tripping particularly successful. If you have no intention of editing these
documents anywhere but in Word, you could delete those fields.

Hope this helps.
