backup files

I had a problem with onenote and the backup files. When
on auto backup the application kept shutting down. I have
removed the auto backup and it is now OK but I appear to
have Gigabytes of backup files on my system that I cant
delete them.

Help please!

A few questions.

0. Are you running the original 2003 version or the SP1 "Preview" build we
released a few weeks ago?
1. By "auto backup" do you mean that the checkbox in Tools / Options /
Backup called "Automatically back up my notebook..." is checked?
2. Is the "Time Interval" control still on the default of "1 Day"?
3. Is the "Number of Backup Copies to keep" still on the default of "2"?
4. By "application kept shutting down" do you mean that OneNote just
vanishes without a trace or is there some kind of error or warning dialog
first?
5. In Tools / Options / Open and Save / Paths / Backup Folder still set to
the default (...\Application Data\...)?
6. Back in Tools / Options / Backup if you press the "Backup Now" button
does the application shut down or does it work?
7. Where are the existing (large) backup files that you can't get rid of?
Are they in the folder specified in #5?
8. What do you mean when you say you can't delete them? Can you not find
them to delete them? Or is that you can try to delete them but get some
sort of error message?

Thanks! And I'm very sorry you're having troubles.

I am running the original version.

I started running oneNote last year and all was fine. I
then discovered the Tools / Options backup facility and
set it to backup every day. Shortly after this (or maybe
immediately) every time I opened up oneNote it shut down
again.

Microsoft sent me a new copy but the same happened again.
Finally after contacting support they suggested removing
the backup and this worked, I have been using it ever
since.

However my hard disk has filled up and looking in Local
Settings/application data/microsoft/oneNote/Backup I
appear to have about 30 backup folders (called OneNote
backup date) containing most of my My Docs filing system
which is huge. I have tried to just delete them but it
give an error message

Cant find the specified file, make sure you have the
correct file and path name

In answer to some of your questions OneNote vanished
without trace when I was having problems. I no longer use
the backup facility and all the backup files date back to
when I was having problems. Without it the software works
just fine and I backup manually.

Any ideas on how to get my disk clean please?

You might try running scandisk on your computer. Go to My Computer (Or
Windows Explorer, doesn't matter). Right-click your C: drive, choose Properties
| Tools | Error-Checking (top choice).
You'll undoubtedly have to restart in order for it to run. See if that
finds any errors.

Yikes. Sounds wretched. And more than a little bizarre. Can you send me an
email ([email protected]) so that I can have someone from the
development team get in touch with you? Thanks!

I can not get an email through to you, it just returns.
My email address is (e-mail address removed). I would really
appreciate someone calling me.
