You need to open Windows Explorer, go into Tools, Option, View and make sure
that have cleared the options to Hide Systems files, Hide File extensions
and checked the option to show Protected System files.

Normal.dot will normally reside in Documents & Settings, Username,
Applications Data, Microsoft, Templates folder.

I think it would work to open a blank document and then
save it as a template in another location. You could
still call it Normal.dot, or maybe SaveNormal.dot or
something like that.

Documents created from Normal.dot will not contain the AutoText (documents
cannot store AutoText). Even templates created from Normal.dot will not
contain the AutoText (see "WD2002: Styles and AutoText Are Not Copied to New
Template Based on Normal.dot" at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=291441).
The only way to get these in a new template is to make a copy of Normal.dot.
