backup .pst files will not transfer

Aloha,
Last week our old hard drive crashed. I did have all my outlook emails
backed up on a disk .pst because this is my business.

The new hard drive is installed as are all the programs. Outlook 2003 Small
Business (which we also used last time) is up and running fine. I now need
to import these emails, notes, calendar, etc from the disk.

I have read NOT to use the Import function in Outlook but to copy the files
to the hard drive. It seems the files have "Read-only" checked. When I go
to uncheck and click apply an error message comes up stating "An error
occured applying attributes to the file D:/Outlookbackup.pst. Access denied."

We thought that we would try unchecking the "Read-Only" box and not close
out the properties window while trying to copy to the hard drive. The
copying did run until the very end when another error message came up "Data
Error - cyclic redundancy check".

So here we are. I desperately need to get these files onto my computer. As
mentioned my entire business contacts for the last 8 months are on this disk.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you Don but that did not work. We also tried to just copy the file
from the D drive to the C drive and then uncheck "Read Only" but the same CRC
error message came up.

If your D: drive is a CDROM, you can't change the attribute because the
drive and CD are read only. You should be able to copy the .PST file to
your hard drive and remove the attribute there. Does the CRC error occur
during the copy process? If so, the file may be damaged:

Aloha Hal,

Yes, the CDROM is the D drive. The CRC error does occur during the last 15
seconds of copying. I had read that a CRC error means that there is an error
with the hard drive. However, the hard drive is brand new (so Gateway
says:). I appreciate your time Hal. Any other ideas?

Sylvia,

I do not have any actual experience with this error, but if it starts
sounding like the file is corrupted (was the backup ever verified?) you might
want to try using the 2GB Truncation tool. This will mean that you will lose
some data :( , but may be able to recover most of it. :)
