Backup-/Restore-Strategy for disaster recovery

Hi NG,

I search for a guide which tells you the steps to perform to recover a whole
Project Server 2007 in catastrophe case.

I already found a how-to about backing up and restoring the Project Server
database by STSADM. As I also found an article about backing up the database
by MS SQL Server Enterprise Manager, my first question is, if the way by
STSADM is sufficient or if you also need the backup by SQL Enterprise Manager
to fully recover a Project Server 2007 with all components.

Further, I'm looking for information which components you have to backup and
how to restore them in case of fully server damage.

I planned to run Project Server in a VMware Virtual Machine and to keep a
copy of the VM at a secure place. Suffering a server loss I could start the
VM on another server having restored the latest backups from the production
server.

Does this work or do you get trouble with any IDs or databases?

Dear resch,

take backup backup daily or weekly according to schedule whatever you want
by sharepoint central administration site.

I have dont this backup and restore and its working very fine .

when your server will destroy or corrupted.

Step 1: Format the server:
Step 2 : Install Windows Server 2003
Step 3 : Install Service Packs of Windows Server 2003.
Step 4 : Install Sql Server 2005 .
Step 5 : Install Sql Server 2005 final Service Pack .
Step 6 : Install Project Server 2007.
Step 7 : Install Project Professional 2007 .
Step 8 : Install Final Service pack of Windows Share Point Services 3.0.
Step 9 : Install Final Service Pack of Project Server 2007.
Step 10 : Install Final Service Pack of Project Professional 2007.
Step 11 : Install Infrastructure Update of Windows Share Point Services 3.0.
Step 12 : Install Infrastruture Update of Project Server 2007.(Named Office
Server Infrastructure update . which is for Project Server 2007,MOSS
2007,Exchange Server 2007) .
Step 13 : Install Infrastructure Update of Project Professional 2007.

then open the sharepoint central administration site and go to
Operations --> Topology and Services ---> Services on server
and select custom service and start all services accept windows sharepoint
search

then go to Operations --> Backup and Restore --> Restore from Backup
and specify the path of backup file location and press OK.
and process the further process.

at the end the restore will be successfull if you follow these steps with
the same order.
always first install service packs and then infrastructure updates.

Thanks a lot for your reply, Sam.

Not only because the productive server is setup with Cube and other features
but also to reduce the downtime of the server my favourite solution would be
to do the VM-way. Do you or something else know if you have to expect any
difficulties?

Of course, the saved VM machine should be updated from time to time with new
patches to meet the patch level of the production server.
