Hello there, please which is most appropriate backup mechanism to employ
currently i am running both sql sever backup with sql server 2005 tools and
doing backup with the central administration tool. Also is there an automated
like a schedule task to perform backup using the central administration tool?

Thank you.

I would do a SharePoint Central Admin backup when ever you perform any config
changes to the sharepoint env.

I would then do a SQL backup each day, which will sort out the project and
WSS data.

So, from a DR perspective, you would restore the SharePoint CA backup first
which gives you your farm back, and then restore the datafiles and that gives
you the content.
