Bad extensions are preventing me from opening my files

I have an old back-up disc. For some reason, all my files, word and excel,
just show up with a period after the name. When I try to open the files, it
tells me the file could not be found--to change the name. I can't change the
name, since it is a CDR, so I haven't been able to open the files. Any ideas?

Thanks

You shouldn't open Word or Excel files directly from a CD anyway. Copy
them to your hard drive, and open them from there. You can rename them
once they are on your hard drive.

Thanks. But I can't copy them, as every time I try, it just tells me that it
can't find the first file and stops.

Since it's an "old" back up disk, it's very possible it has gone bad. That
can easily happen to cheap media.

Then maybe the wrong application was used to write the files to the CD,
or maybe the files were not written properly to the CD, or maybe the
writing session wasn't closed, or maybe the CD is damaged. Sorry, it's
not a Microsoft Word problem.

I'll try to get back to the computer where I created these files. But I have
looked them up before with no problem.
