Bad Font Message when launching Word

I am in Word 2004, version 11.3, system 10.4.8. I had a crash in Word when
trying to save a document to my external hard drive because I inadvertently
right clicked instead of left. Still learning to use this mighty mouse. When
I went to relaunch word I started getting all sort of corrupt font messages,
so I force quit. Went to another user on my system and Word worked fine.

Is there some way I can fix my user so this problem will go away in Word. I
was having issues with Entourage last week and suggestions on removing
preferences were provided. I did not have to do that, as a product update
seemed to clear up that problem, but now this new problem has surfaced with
Word, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Sharon Marshall

See if any of the methods mentioned on this website solve your problem:

You might try discarding the Microsoft font cache for that user.
Quit Word and all its little friends.
delete
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)
Start Word again. Happy now?

If (not happy) then destroy the Mac system font cache.
The best way to do so is get Font Finagler off versiontracker.com and
run that once. (you get 10 free goes before you have to pay for it)

if (still not happy) then you are in uncharted territory. You might try
asking Font Book to check your fonts. I don't think that will help
much, since Word should never have been scribbling over them, but you
never know how insane it was just before it died.

The trick with mighty mouse is finger management. You should always get
a primary click with a finger on each side of the mouse at the same
time. You need a finger on the secondary click side ONLY to get a
secondary (right) click.

I'm left handed. I found it far more reliable after swapping the
secondary click to the left side. My lefts-clicks are right clicks and
my.. ah you know what I mean.

It might help to have
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DamagedPrefs.html handy for detailed
instructions.

Thanks so much Elliott, I'll give it a whirl. The advice on the mouse is
helpful as well. I should never upgrade hardware in the middle of deadlines,
but have been suffering from disk issues in my neck, and thought that the
wireless approach would help. It's helped the neck, but caused some issues in
normal operation I used to take for granted. Always something.
