bad links

I have a similar problem. All my links used to work with unopened workbooks
but today this is not the case. I have no idea why the links worked yesterday
and not today. this is frustrating for me as I have programmed a whole MES
system with excel and now it plain doesnt work. This has nothing to do with
location or formula types as the whole system was working yesterday and
worked for the previous 6 months. any suggestions are welcome.

What does it do?
Have the file names changed or are they now in a different location?

Acually I found the problem. It was niether file name change or a relocated
file, but rather simply someone accidently protected workbood instesd of
worksheet after making some updates. The files could still be updated by
opening the affected file manually but excel would not allow other files to
link to it. Anyone who's had the same problem and checked first two more
obvious solutions should also check the protection.
