Bad object/some folders don't archive

R

Randy Barth

I'm having two problems with Outlook XP that may be related since they seem
to have started around the same time.

I'm using .pst's and have an active post office and an archive post office.
Both have passwords. The active was set up to auto archive to the archive
by default on 6 months, though many folders and longer or shorter times.
For many years I always had to cancel the auto archive attempt that occured
every 14 days since it wouldn't work because of the password on the archive
file. Then I would open the archive post office, supply the password, and
then run the auto archive from the menu "using the archive settings." Then
I'd close the archive post office again. This all worked fine.

For some reason about 6 months ago, the archive post office started showing
up in my post office/folder drop down (to the right of the Outlook bar).
When I'd right-click and attempt to close it, I'd get the message "The
operation failed. An object could not be found." I also get that message if
I open the properties and attempt to click the Advanced button on the
General page (though the folder size button works fine). It was a minor
annoyance since I now had to enter the archive password at each reboot, but
I lived with it. And it had the side benefit that I didn't have to open it
for AutoArchive to run.

Now I notice some folders aren't archiving, whether from AutoArchive or
manual. The archive runs but nothing moves. I tried pointing the manual
archive at a fresh filename thinking the old post office might be damaged,
but that doesn't work. Other folders seem to do fine.

OTOH, I also tried archiving everything from the old archive to a new file,
then renaming them. That still didn't fix anything about not being able to
close it. In fact, even inserting a new empty post office into that name
doesn't allow it to be removed, so it's something in the configuration, not
the post office. I renamed the active post office and created a new one,
but that didn't make the listing of the bad archive go away. I changed the
name of the default archive thinking maybe that's why it was being
remembered, but its still that old name that is remembered somewhere in some
profile but can't be removed.

Any ideas on what's wrong here?
