Barcodes to trigger insertion of text in a merge document

I want to build a document creation system using barcodes and a reader.
I want to create a menu sheet with the barcodes printed on it for wan
reading. Each barcode will represent a block of text to be inserte
into a Word merge document. (The merge portion draws variable data fro
an ODBC database.) Are there any off-the-shelf systems that will d
this? Thanks in advance
