Baseline data is lost

I have a person who is working on a local plan and each time he saves the
plan updated to the server he lost the baseline data. Also, if I am the
person who saves the same file to the server the baseline data is not lost
and if he saves a different file it doesn’t not lost the baseline data.
Any help on this?

Thank you in advance,
Marta

Several questions:

1. What version of Project Server are you using? 2003 or 2007? It would
help if we knew that fact.

2. What do you mean by "local plan?" Do you mean an MPP file? If so, why
is this person working with an MPP file and then saving it to Project
Server?

3. In what security Group is the user in question? The Project Managers
group, for example? And what security Group are you as well?

4. Has your Project Server administrator changed any of the default
permissions in Groups and/or Categories in Project Server? I ask this
because in Project Server 2007, there is a security permission that can be
set to prevent PMs from baselining a project.

Let us know and we will try to help.

Hi Dale,

In response to your questions:

1. We are using Project Server 2007
2. Yes, he uses a mpp local file. I believe this happens because of
insufficient confidence on the Server. And every week he does a "save as" to
the server and REPLACES the file that was earlier saved to the server.
3. We are in different security groups. I have Admin permissions, he is in
the group of permissions defined to Project Managers (PM). Please notice that
no other PM (with same permissions) complained about this issue and this PM
can actually publish other mpp files withou losing its baseline data. This
means that is not a permission problem, right?
4. Yes I did change some permissions but not the one you are talking about
(I've checked it). I changed them some months when we started using Project
Server in order to fit the company needs.

Thank you for the attention,
Marta

Your PM in question is not using the Project Server 2007 system correctly.
Given that fact, I wouldn't be surprised with the results. Continually
saving an enterprise project as an MPP file, editing it, and resaving it as
an MPP file is very bad process. Given the fact that he/she can do this
same bad process without the baseline oddity, I would suspect that the file
in question is corrupted. He/she can save it as an XML file and then
reimport it into the Project Server 2007 system, which usually resolves the
corruption.

Word of advice: I would strongly encourage you to get your PMs to "cease
and desist" using Project Server 2007 in the manner described. Lack of
confidence in the Project Server 2007 is not a valid reason for using the
tool as you describe. This is definitely a training and performance issue.
I think you need to train all of your PMs how to use the software correctly,
and then mandate that they do it right! Engage your project sponsor to
assist with this mandate, if necessary.

Hope this helps.
