baseline duration vs task duration

R

R.Scott Fleming

When in the gantt view and the “baseline†bar is showing(turned on), when I
drag the cursor over the baseline bar, the duration amount/value in the
sub-window is the duration amount of the task not the baseline duration
amount/value.

For example:
A task has a Baseline duration of 4wks

I then adjust the tasks duration to 3wks (example of a tasks duration that
has been improved/reduced...).

When dragging the cursor over the baseline bar, the duration amount in the
sub-window is 3wks (graphically it shows at 4wks and the baseline duration
column amount/value is 4wks).

Curious..

Hi R. Scott Fleming,

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "sub-window". Do you
mean the small screen tip that shows in the Gantt chart when your
mouse is over the bar?

Double check the definition of the "baseline bar" through Format >
Bar Styles. The bar should be drawn from Baseline Start to Baseline
Finish. Is that what you are seeing?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

R.Scott,
What version of Project are you using? Do you have the latest updates
installed?

A baseline Gantt bar does not normally show in the default Gantt Chart
view so I will assume you added it. If so, are you sure you set the
"from" and "to" for the bar to be the Baseline Start and Baseline Finish
fields?

To better understand what you are talking about I did a quick sample
task with a starting duration of 20 days. I then set a baseline and
added a baseline bar to the view. I then reset the duration to 10 days.
If I place the mouse over the task bar it will display a duration of 10
days. If I place the mouse over the baseline bar it will display a
duration of 20 days. In other words it works fine for me.

Sorry... replied this foirst tho an other post:

Hi Johniffer,

I tried exactly what you suggested in Project 2007, SP1.
I added the baseline bar through the Gantt Chart Wizard (I think that's how
you did it since you do not mention using the Tracking Gantt nor Bar Styles)
Then... the baseline bar is on top, not at the bottom as in the Tracking
Gantt.
And the cursor "window" shows the baseline duration allright!

Hope this helps,

John,
I am running 2002 (10.0.2104.1305) SP-1. I will try to install any updates
to see if this fixes the issue. Yes, you set up the example correctly. I
tried it again using your exact dates and I still have the problem... Thank
you again for your suggestion.

R.Scott,
Project 2002 is the one version I don't have so unfortunately I can't
tell you if it's version sensitive. It is my understanding though that
Project 2002 is a bit of a "lame duck" (i.e. didn't really add any
significant features that I'm aware of). You might want to consider
upgrading to either Project 2003 or the current version, Project 2007.
