Baseline Question

Newbie at Baselines... I've created a baseline and would like to re-baseline.
I've read about saving a "copy" of the original baseline to "Baseline 1".
When I copy "Baseline" to "Baseline 1", I assume dates should be identical.
What if they aren't? I noticed that "Baseline 1" is applying data that is in
the Actual Start and Actual Finish. Please help.

When you want to create another baseline, which copy do you make your
changes, and how do you save to "Baseline 2"? And once "Baseline 2" is saved
with new dates, can you view the baselines side by side?

(a) You can view all of your baselines all at once. Just insert the
appropriate columns (Baseline Start, Baseline Finish, Baseline1 Start, etc.)
to you view by right-clicking on the top bar.

(b) You can save baselines to Baseline, Baseline1 ... Baseline10 directly
using "Tools | Tracking | Save Baseline". You just have to remember which
baseline you used last... Now, how to get around that is to create a new
view and add all Baselines to mit so you know which ones were used.

(c) If you do a column copy from Baseline to Baseline1 or whatever, the data
will be identical (until changed, of course).

Did that cover all of your points? If not, please repost!

Hello Rick,

I was able to follow your b and c points below. I'm still a bit confused
about entering in new scope/dates which should be my Baseline 2. Where would
I do this and how do I save? Does the incremental Baselines save data when
new data is entered in the Start/Finish fields, Actual Start/Finish or the
original Baseline?

This is in addition to what Rick has stated above.

Basically, what you do is change the dates in the Tracking Gantt view.
That is the 1st step. Then if you want to save these dates to Baseline
2 (as you mentioned) then follow the step (b)above. Then save the
Baseline -for the entire project since what you are creating is a new
baseline. This way, the dates saved in the earlier baseline will be
retained.

However, there are some unwritten principles while changing the
baseline. You create a new baseline when there have been some major
changes in the project and project has finished a major phase and a
relook at the remainder of the tasks need to be done. Am giving a very
simplistic view though.

Hope this answers your question.
