Basic Formatting Project Plan

I am having formatting problems with MS Project 2007. When I indent or
outdent the project plan is altered drastically.

It will not allow me to use the icons for basic formatting.

Indenting has a special meaning within project. It makes the indented task a
sub-task of the one it is indented from. This changes the duration of the
parent task. Indenting should not be done just for the sake of formatting.
It should follow the work breakdown structure of the project.
