I have Visio 2002 and two questions regarding the Shapes window that appears
on the left side when you create a new document by selecting a template.

First, if after accidentally closing the Shapes window, how do you get the
window back?

Secondly, is it possible to add additional stencil collections to the Shapes
window? And if so, how?

They don't seem like tough things to do, but I haven't been able to find any
references in the help.

TIA,

The green window to the left is the stencil window. If you close the
stencil, you can reopen using the "Open Stencil" menu command. You can also
create a new stencil or modify an existing stencil. Though it is preferred
to leave the existing stencils alone so that any changes made will not be
lost when you upgrade.

Thanks for replying, but I can't find an "Open Stencil" menu command. I
looked through all the top-level menu items. Again, I'm using Visio 2002
Professional.

I don't believe I explained myself well the first time. When I create a new
document and specify the flowcharting template, I get a collection of
flowcharting stencils in the stencil window with a caption bar of "Basic
Flowcharting Shapes". If I wish to have that collection available when I
have specified some other template, can I load that collection into the
stencil window? And if so, how would I do that?

TIA,

In Visio 2002, it is under the File Menu --> Stencils --> Open Stencil.

Visio only has one file format, the file extension tells Visio how to open
the file. A *.vsd is opened as a drawing and a *.vss file is opened as a
stencil. When you drag shapes from a stencil to a drawing, the shapes are
added to the drawings local stencil. This part of the Visio drawing, can
also be opened in a stencil window.
