Basline alignment shifts after including a windows meta file into

K

Karl Rothenberg

Using Microsoft Word 2007 on Windows XP and on Windows Vista
Using MathType by Design Science to insert equations into a line of text on
the document

Here's the problem and how I arrived at it:

Open a blank document in Word 2007.
Type some sample text and insert an inline equation using MathType.
Close and save the document in the regular 2007 (.docx) format.
Open the same document and start typing some sample text after the MathType
equation object.

Result is the cursor is using the bottom of the MathType equation object
(it's a Windows Meta File) as a reference point for the baseline of the text
to follow. This is a problem if the equation object happens to be one that
occupies a lot of vertical space because the text that follows the object
aligns lower than the text that precedes it.

It should be noted that this problem does not occur in versions of Word
Pre-2007. Does anyone know about this and if so, are there any suggestions
for what's happening?

This is how Word operates when graphics/objects are set inline. Set the Text
Wrapping not to be "In Line with Text" but "Square" or "Tight."

This is also how prior versions of Word operate--though in those versions,
MathType may have automatically set Text Wrapping to be "Square" or "Tight."

Hi Cliff,

I tried what you suggested. Didn't help. It actually made it worse. When I
changed the properties to "Square" or to "Tight" it caused the MathType
object to become a floating object rather than being anchored to the text
line. This created even worse results with respect to the surrounding text.

So the search continues...

If you want text to wrap around the MathType object, it will have to float.
And even though it may not appear to be anchored, it is anchored. All
floating objects in Word are anchored to text. Turn on paragraph marks to
see the anchor and drag and drop it where you want.

To get its positioning vis-a-vis the anchor correct: right-click on the
object, and choose Format xxxx (xxxx being Object, Picture, or some such),
Layout tab, Advanced, and specify the alignment manually: e.g.., left
relative to column, top relative to line. You can also lock the anchor
there.

Khalid,

Evidently this was a different subject line than the post you are
referring to, therefore I don't know what the "same problem" is.
Please write back and be specific.

However, let me state that if you are not using MathType version
6 (released only a week and a half ago), you're likely to have
problems with Word 2007.

I did the following as described by Karl.....

"Open a blank document in Word 2007.
Type some sample text and insert an inline equation using MathType.
Close and save the document in the regular 2007 (.docx) format.
Open the same document and start typing some sample text after the
MathType
equation object.

Result is the cursor is using the bottom of the MathType equation
object
(it's a Windows Meta File) as a reference point for the baseline of
the text
to follow. This is a problem if the equation object happens to be one
that
occupies a lot of vertical space because the text that follows the
object
aligns lower than the text that precedes it. "

I have Mathtype 6+ Word 2007, and I got the same issue as Karl
explained above. However, what I did is:

1- Open a blank document in Word 2007. Type some sample text and
insert an inline equation using MathType.
Close and save the document in the regular 2007 (.docx) format.
2-Open the same document and start typing some sample text after the
MathType equation object.
Result is the cursor is using the bottom of the MathType equation
object.

3- Cut the equation and paste it again just one character before
original typed text (the one before the equation).
4- Now you have text+equation+one charcter only. You can add more text
after the one character.
5- You will notice that the courser came back to its original
position. You can now check your spelling.

Regards,
