After posting this in office.setup, I realized that I will be more likely to
get an answer here.
.....which I need badly
I did what every wise computer professional would strongly advise against: I
did three major projects rolled into one:
- Installation of a new hardware+OS (Windows 2003)
- Migration from Exchange 2000 to 2003 (onto the new system)
- Office 2003 upgrade.
Quite understandably I had a bunch of problems, I need help with the one
effecting the users the most.
As a standard practice, I redirected the "My documents" folders to the users
home directory.
Unfortunately, I always entered a network path instead of drive mapping
\\serverone\share1 instead of Xmapped to serverone\share1) My logic of
choosing this was the more permanent nature of network paths and that is
where my problem is. The new server has a different name. When I moved all
documents to it, the users started to run into problems. Quite a few of the
documents have references pointing to the server that is no longer
available.
Renaming the server would be quite a big job since I would have to undo all
the changes on the desktops.
What I would like to know, if there is somne utility that would go through
Word and Excel documents to replace references of \\Serverone with either
\\servertwo or <mappeddriveletter>
(let's say 'h:')?
Exchange 2003 is running on the server and I am affraid that I would have to
migrate all mailboxes to another server before I can rename this one.
I need to solve this today, your advice would be greatly appreciated
