Batch Conversion Wizard

What I need to do is convert several hundred files scattered across several
hundred directories.. so far I've been going directory by directory
converting the files.
However this is painfully slow and I was wondering if there was a way to
automate the conversion wizard in such a way that it would convert all the
files in the root and subdirectories, and place the converted filetype in the
same folder as the original.
Is there perhaps a dos based command to run the conversion wizard, so that I
can create a batch script, or is there another trick that might work just as
well?

I'm converting word 2000.doc files to rtf, and then back to word 2000.
Reason being is that it takes several minutes to open even a simple 1 page
document and I've found that converting backwards and forwards corrects it.

I suspect you are encountering an issue with a missing document
template. Open a document that displays this behavior and go to
Tools/Templates and Add-ins and note the document template location.
If Word is unable to find the template it will time out and eventually
default to the Normal.dot. The wait time can become painful if you are
on a network.

They have a fix for Word 2002 and Windows XP but not for Word 2000.

Rather than saving as RTF and back to Word again you're better off
using a macro to open each document and modify the attached template.
The folks over in one of the Word VBA newsgroups should have some code
handy to help you out with this.
