BCM 2007 on SQL 2000 server

Hi all,

I have been doing a lot of reading on this topic and although some
people hinted that this can be done, not one has actually confirmed it
nor posted any step by step guide at doing so.

I realise that a whitepaper is available for BCM 2007 deployment on
sbs 2003 R2 with SQL 2005 workgroup: http://download.microsoft.com/
download/e/a/9/ea922f63-dff5-45db-9c83-d0267daf805d/bcm_sql.doc

but is the above applicable to sql 2000 server?

I am trying to have the DB in sql 2000 rather then 2005 express in
order to bypass the 4 gig limit on the DB size.

any help, guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

No. sql 2000 is not supported with BCM v3/2007.

I've never heard of anyone running into the 4 gig limit though, nor
running into MSDE's 2 gig limit with BCM v1 or v2.

I would expect Outlook to run too slowly to be useful if it was
managing millions of emails and contacts.

Thanks for the quick reply luther.

I understand it is not supported (by MS) but would you know if it is
technically doable?

Cheers,

Potantially doable. I haven't tried it, but in my experience BCM tends
to use the database through regular ADO interfaces, and the database
itself seems to use familar features--I haven't come across BCM using
any Sql 2005 features. However, they won't support you if something
doesn't work, and your installation will probably be less secure.

Would the following path be advised:

1. install BCM 2007 on a server
2. share the databse
3. If the 4 gig limit on sql 2005 express looks like being reached,
upgrade sbs2003 sp1 to R2

or

if we are pushing the 4 gig limit we probably should be looking at
CRM3 anyway.

Does that sound about right?

I definately favor installing BCM, and letting it setup up Sql and
create the database over the alternative of doing the same manually.
BCM configures a bunch of Sql related settings (instance name, tcp
port) and if you replicate that process manually, and miss one
setting, finding it can take to many hours of frustrating work. And
once you have the database running on Express, upgrading it to a more
powerful version of Sql can be fairly straightforward.

I also concur that if you anticipate more than 4 gig of data, BCM is
probably not the right option for you. To manage that much data you
probably need features that BCM doesn't provide in areas like user
management. I think that your users' requirements (features, etc.) are
what will ultimately drive the choice of what software is best for
your installation, rather than the quantity of raw data--4 gigs is A
LOT of contacts and associated data.
