beginner and queries

Hi...

I am working on a database with school years as one of the
fields. I have been able to establish a query that
results in giving me ALL the records that are PRIOR to,
for example, school year 2000-2001.

My question here involves HOW can I break it down PER
SCHOOL YEAR (say, for example, 2001-2002; 2002-2003; and
2003-2004)? I was able to get ALL the school years PRIOR
to 2003-2004, but I don't know how to just get any school
year ALONE. I've been using <"2001" to get the records in
the database BEFORE 2001-2002; when I do the same formula
for <"2002", it just lists ALL THE SCHOOL YEARS prior to
the one in the "criteria" column in the design sheet.

Also, how exactly can I have the records for the above-
referenced question be in ascending order for each
students last name, and in descending order for the
schooll year field? Is that even possible? I tried it,
but it just does ONE or the OTHER, but never both.

Still puzzled and still learning...
Thank you in advanced for any responses...

Thank you, greatly, Sandra! I will go and try that
now. :)

I'm a self-taught Access individual who has created a very
effective database, but every once in a while I still run
into a few bumps on the road... The MS Access 2000 Bible
is terrific, but sometimes I still don't have all the
answers!
Thanks again,
Suzette

Thank you, Sandra!
I was able to separate each individual school year. Now,
I will attempt the other part of your answer...
