Beginner font question on Book Antiqua

Norm

I use Palatino for almost all my word processing.

However, I read today that Book Antiqua is the same font but found more
often on a Windows machine. See
<http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CreateATemplatePart2.htm>

I found Book Antiqua on my Mac so I visually compared the two..... put
on the specs and gave it a look. ;)

They look at exactly the same to me. Interesting.

However, the Book Antiqua has a smidgen (a highly technical WP term)
more vertical spacing.

How would a font expert define that kind of difference?

Just curious.

Thanks.

I don't claim to be a 'font expert' by any stretch of the imagination, but I
have played around with this in InDesign... And it would seem you have a
rather keen eye :)

From what I can tell the slight difference you're noticing is attributable
to to a variance in the baseline offset used in the design of the fonts &
how Word - notorious for its lack of typography savvy ‹ interprets that
difference. All the more reason to not mix fonts in a paragraph.

Thank you for that info. I thought it might be that Book Antiqua
actually was designed with different vertical spacing. But I had no clue.

Thanks.
