Beginner seeking macro help, writing Word to Wiki conversion

Hi --

I have a number of Word documents I need to convert for uploading to a Wiki.
I've tried a couple of the converters that are out there (Word2MediaWiki,
etc.) but they don't do what I need. I'd like to create my own macro to do
this. An example for one task is all I need. For example:

In the Active Document, I would like to search for every instance of bolded
text and insert <b> at the beginning of that word or string of text and </b>
at the end, and when that is complete redoc the search and replace for
italics or bullets, etc.

Any tips for how I would do this?

I know this is a very old question, but in case it helps anyone, this is can
be a very huge project. I have a book about XML and the subject of
conversion of a Woed document to XML is the only aubject. I have however
seen a tool in the Microsoft web site somewhere for converting Word to XML.
