Beginner vX Word printer ?s

A couple of beginner MS Word ?s related to printing.

Using MS Word vX and OS X 10.3.5.

1.If I open one of my documents, print it and then try to close it, it
ask if I want to save the changes. I haven't made any changes, I've just
printed a copy. This doesn't happen with all my docs but many of them.
Can't figure out why.

2. This is a related question and maybe a clue to the first question.
When I open Page Setup it shows "Any Printer" in the "Format for" line
but when I go to actually print it shows my printer (HP 5MP) as the
Printer. Why?

and totally unrelated but...

Is it MS Word or OS X causing this: when I create a name for a document
beyond a certain number of characters it adds this string: "#3CAE1".
Curious.

Thanks for any tips.

Does the Word document have any fields in it that will be updated when
printed, like Table Of Contents?

When you do Page Setup you are generally just setting the page to US
Letter, A4 or other standard setting. You might not be printing where
you are. When you print you are printing to a specific printer. Page
Setup allows you to do set up for a specific printer as different
printers could have special page sizes, like photo printing.

It's a Microsoft Office v.X issue. Microsoft didn't update all the code
to handle larger file names greater than the OS 9 standard of 31
characters. The operating system is providing the 31 character
equivalent of the file name. Office 2004 does not have this problem.

Thanks for responding.

Answer to this: I don't think so.

I've re-looked at the document and there are no shaded fields such as
when dates update to current date. So unless I'm overlooking something.
No fields that are updates.

Got it. I thought when I changed the default printer that Page Setup
would then reflect the Default. Thanks.

Hi Norm:

Heading Numbering and Page Numbering are the usual culprits.

There's quite a bit about a Word document that is dynamically generated.
For example, the page breaks in a normal Word document do not exist in the
file, they are inserted by Word on the way to the printer.

When you print a document, one of the things Word does is store the print
settings you used in the document. It also updates the document statistics
that appear on File>properties>Statistics.

So it is unusual "not" to get a prompt to save after printing a Word
document, because internally several things "have" changed.

Hope this helps

OP back.

Thanks for that input.

I just wish I could figure out why some seemingly similar docs do that
and others don't.

I usually end up not selecting Save since I didn't think i made any
changes.

Again thanks.
