"Bend....." and Styles ?s

One of the beginners back for a couple of questions.

At the suggestion here, I'm using "Bend..." and the MVP site to better
understand MS Word 2008. It was a good suggestion. Thanks again.

A couple of questions:

1. When I open "Bend..." each time Word alerts me that 2008 does not
support Macros. I Open and Remove and then Save thinking I won't get the
message the next time. But same message next launch. ?

2. I'm into the Style part of the process and Clive points one to MS
Word Help which I just finished on Styles but....
in going thru the Help tutorial, including downloading and using their
doc to use for their help steps, when I try to select "All Styles" to
either clear or change all occurrences of a style "All Styles" is grey
and can't be selected. Tried on a couple of other docs and same problem.
????

Be sure to save the file if you want the change (macros removed) to
become effective for the next time you open the file.

I'm not sure, but if you're in the Format Styles dialog box, the pop-up
for All Styles determines which styles are displayed in the list of
styles. It does not let you select all of the styles in the styles list.
You can edit or delete one style at a time. Are you saying you want to
delete all existing styles? That would create quite a problem if you
could, as styles exist for all kinds of important built-in features and
you would have a dysfunctional copy of Word if you succeeded.

the problem you're reporting. I'm not sure I'm doing the same actions that
you are, though. Can you be a little more specific about what you're doing &
the conditions where "All Styles" isn't available?

One of the steps was to change formatting where one was to select a
paragraph and then, under Styles in the Formatting Pallette, select "All
Styles" which would then select all text with that formatting. It
doesn't work for me. Just is grey and can't select it.

Hope that is clearer. Sorry for the first attempt. :-(

I don't know exactly what passage in "Bend Word..." you're referring to, but
there must be a misunderstanding somewhere.

What you seem to be looking for sounds more like the "Select All" tool which
is preceded by 2 ¶s in the top part of the Formatting Palette. It's right
next to the New Style button beneath the top field that displays the current
formatting of the selected text. That's what's used to select all text
formatted in the same way as what you have selected.

What I believe you're attempting to use is the option from the very bottom
of the Styles section of the Formatting Palette that determines what Style
names display in the "Pick a Style to Apply" list.

Not in "Bend Word..". Clive's piece refers the reader to Microsoft
tutorial. As I said, I was going through one of the steps in the MS Word
2008 tutorial on styles.

Well, I'm afraid I don't know what to tell you, Norm. I've gone through the
tutorial using the sample document & it sounds like you're definitely on the
right track. However, I don't recall ever having seen that button dimmed,
nor can I force it to happen here now. I've tried in a variety of different
documents of various file types, played around with Protection & everything
else I can think of. The Select All button remains completely operational
regardless of what I try. And AFAIK there is no Preference that affects that
feature in any way. Anything that might deactivate it actually causes the
Formatting Palette to close up completely so I can't even get in there to
see if the button may have dimmed.

If this is happening in a variety of documents try running Word in a
different user account & try launching Word while holding the Shift key
down. Perhaps one of those diagnostic steps will shed some light on it.

Hmmm..... not sure what it means but if I follow either one of your

Started with the first one..... Word.plist..... and that cleared the
"Select All" problem. Thank you.

Wish they had a procedure for repairing for those of us with poor
memories and who did not record their preferences the first time. :-(
But will the second.

restored your settings. Keeping it updated can be a chore, though,
especially since *updates* to Office have to be taken into account as well
since "old" prefs files might cause conflicts.

I'm trying to do a better job of learning word but I'm finding it a time
consuming task. Perhaps Pages should get another look.

At any rate, I'm not sure what is saved in the Normal template and what
is saved in the individual MS files in my User folder.

For example, by trashing the plist file have I now lost all my revisions
that I made while reading "Bend Word....." ?

I continually key in Command-Shift-4 and drag to select the area of the

And further to my forgetfulness, Norm: I forgot to mention that if you
additionally hold down the Control key, not only will you get the benefit of
finger-dexterity exercise, you will put the selection on the clipboard...
