Register the site at the Open Directory Project, www.dmoz.org and then be patient.

You can also register it with Google. But only register it once, and then be patient

As for keywords, make sure the keywords match content that is visible in the page. If they don't
match, the spiders will ignore them and possibly your pages also.

Your responce leads me to ask another question: The responce was the
following:
As for keywords, make sure the keywords match content that is visible in the
page. If they don't match, the spiders will ignore them and possibly your
pages also.

Next Question is does this mean that the keywords must match for each
invidule page in the website or does it mean the collection of keywords
accross a combination of pages accross the entire website: Can you point me
to some links techincial references and articals that talk about the keywords
and how spiders behave with the keywords. THANKS

http://searchenginewatch.com/webmasters/ for some information.

Keywords must match the text on the individual page.

Please note: Many search engines ignore keywords these days, and index
according to the page content.

Hi Frank,
I never use meta keywords atall and have a lot of high rankings - they've
been used and abused so much over the years that the search engines that
matter ignore them. The important points are -
Chose the right keywords, here's a good place to research your words
http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ Pick battles
you can win, eg don't try competing against Amazon for the phrase books :)
Better to use rarer keywords that you have a good chance of ranking well on.
Get your keywords in the Url page title Hx tags and well sprinkled
throughout the body of your page. Make sure each page is different, ie
different title headings etc
Get as many links from quality (ie PR4 +) sites as you can. Don't worry
about links at first, google won't apply them to your rankings for a couple
of months.
When your sites ready link to it from one other site, another of yours or a
friend/associate etc. This will be enough for the engines to find you
Submit manually to www.DMOZ.org - chose as many categories as are relevant
but don't submit to categories that don't fit your site. Once you get in
here (takes about a month but no gaurantees) you'll start getting lots of
incoming links.

Other than the above it takes time - all else being equal your site will
rank better after 6 months than 1 month and so on...

Page by page is the best route. As mentioned earlier, meta
tags have been abused and the search engines do not rely on
them for primary indexing. They are used though as the
search engines will see if and how they are used on the
page.

What I forgot to say originally was that the best way to get
seen by the search engines is links to and from other sites.
Links to other sites are helpful when the webmaster looks at
the logs and sees your site feeding him viewers, and they
may reciprocate by providing links to you.

I don't use meta keywords. You get better results by making sure you
have all the key phrases that relate to your site in the pages. The
most important thing after that, as I see it, is having links to and
from other related sites. Following the above advice, I put up a new
site in April, told google it was up, and 3 days later many of the
search engines had it listed.
