Best free email ISP to use with Entourage: Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc?

What is the best free email provider to use with Entourage??

My college son has a free Hotmail email account and has Entourage 2004
mail client on 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro with Mac OS 10.4.
(I previously had 10 Hotmail email accounts/addresses myself.)

Hotmail does not work with Entourage:
In a previous year (2003?), Hotmail stopped allowing Entourage (and
other 3rd party email clients), even though a Microsoft product
itself, to access and download from a free basic Hotmail email account
to Entourage.
(Supposedly one can use Entourage to download from a paid Hotmail
account, but I'm not certain of this?)

Therefore, my ability to receive email from Hotmail, started to
fail.
For awhile, I used IE to go online to Hotmail and access each Hotmail
account individually. But then, around 2005, this IE connection
started to fail to connect and work well. So I terminated all of my
Hotmail accounts.

Currently, my son can't receive/retrieve his Hotmail emails from
within Entourage, but instead must use an IN browser (such as Safari,
IE) to connect online and sign in to Hotmail and then use it's Mail
email client to view and manage his email.
Therefore he has little interest in using Entourage.
I'm trying to help him switch to a new email service other than
Hotmail.

I want to find a free email service that actually works with Entourage
and allows the access and download of email from within Entourage and
allows the use of Entourage's manual and automatic Send & Receive
schedules.

What is the best free email provider to use to work with Entourage??
How about Google's gmail?
How about YahooMail?
Any other free email ISP?

Yahoo requires a paid service to download also. Google works great with
Entourage.

Also what about your ISP? You should get free account through them. His
college also might offer a free account.

Yahoo! does not offer free POP access with its accounts. Neither does
Hotmail, as you've discovered. However, you're correct that POP access is
now available in Hotmail for Hotmail Plus (paid) users. Those users can set
up their e-mail account in Entourage as a regular POP account.

Bluebottle is a good free mail service with POP access. It seems to work
well with Entourage.

I also have a Gmail account set up in Entourage. It works well too (plus
there are no ads on their outgoing mail server), but it used to retrieve
copies of mail I sent, which I had to create a rule to automatically delete.
I'm not sure they still do that though.

Hey Mickey,

Has there ultimately been an easy way to move your mail off of your
local computer in entourage onto your online gmail account, while
keeping all the info intact? I have a bunch of emails from since I
really started using email in college. At that time, I had them on
Netscape messenger, and then I moved them onto entourage. I would
like ot have all these messages available online though.

A gentleman over here gave some advise on this:

But the process seemed a little complicated. I was hoping for
something as easy as drag and drop

Sorry, I'm not aware of an easy method to import mail into Gmail from
Entourage. This would be rather easy in Entourage if one could access Gmail
as an Exchange account or an IMAP account, but POP is not really intended
for that kind of work.

You might want to look at Fastmail at Fastmail.fm. It allows you to
choose from a variety of domain names, it supports IMAP, a far more
robust protocol than POP and it works very well with Entourage. They
have 4 levels of service, one being free which allows you to give it a
go. I took the $19.95/year option which gives me 600 megs storage, 6
aliases (these are good because if you get spam you can just delete
the alias - don't use the primary account name as that can't be
deleted) and it is the fastest in terms of web access of any of them
(it is almost instantaneous). Check it out. Its great.
