best picture format

which is the best format for inserting a picture in word?
I'd need to insert a large amout of images in a word document and I'd like
to know the better format in order to avoit the loss of quality ot the
images: they are exentially charts (bitmap pic) produced by other programs.
The format I can use are the most common .bmp .jpg .png .tiff: so before
choosing one, I'd like to know which one produces the best results in word
