Best practice for hardware environments

In any typical application software environment, it is not uncommon to have
4 different environments:
Development environment
Test environment
Production environment
Production support environment

Production environment may have more than one server config and has to be
separate.

Would you recommend having 2 instances of project server on the same server
for development & test environment?

Thanks.

Siva:

I'd recommend having a separate system (hardware) for development and
testing if you're going to be developing new code and pounding on the system
for testing. If you're simply talking about experimenting with
configurations controlled through the application, then a separate instance
sharing the same hardware is acceptable. You need to determine the
application's criticality to your organization and your respect your
organization's standards in making this decision.
