Best way to insert one note doc to Outlook or Word

C

Chad Harris

I'm using MOS 2003/Win XP SP2 RC2.

I'm trying to find out the best way to send a One Note document to Word and
also to send a One Note doc to Outlook to store in an Outlook folder or to
send as Wordmail in Outlook. First, with Word, I've used (on the One Note
toolbar) File>Send to Word. Then if I wanted to send that document I could
use Insert>File>on the Wordmail toolbar. Is there a better way? Would Send
to Mail Recipient be another way or easier way (from the One Note toolbar?)

If I wanted to send a One Note document to Outlook to store as an Outlook
folder, what would be the best way?

If I wanted to copy/paste the One Note document, would that involve the
*Office Clipboard* distinct from the regular clipboard that can be viewed
from the Control Panel Applet as a Windows power toy?

Is it possible to take a One Note document and drag it into Outlook or do
you have to move it to a new folder in One Note first?

Thanks much,

Chad Harris

What is a OneNote document? A note container, a page, a section? To copy a
whole page, control a, control c. To copy one container, click on the bar at
the top of the container to select it and control c. To select several, but
not the entire page, drag the mouse to select them, then control c. Select
all the tabs to copy a whole section, then control c. you can paste the
copied data into word or outlook - you'll get one large text file either
way.

1) I would use the built-in method for email unless I didn't have Outlook
2003...
2) you can't send a OneNote file to outlook and create an outlook folder.
Best you can do is savei it as an attachment in an outlook item, but that
results in duplicate files.
3) They go to the office clipboard. I'm not familiar with the power toy, so
I can't say what you'll see there.

Diane--

I was referring to http://www.duxcw.com/faq/win/xp/clip.htm Clipbook Viewer,
and I guess it isn't one of the Powertoys.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx I
was just curious if the Office Clipboard is different, and I'm betting it
might be--I'll have to search around for its file.

I have Outlook 2003 so I guess that the built in method for One Note is
going to use OL by default unless you tell me differently. In One Note

File>Send to or clicking email sends the "item" since I'm still getting them
straight to OL mail/wordmail as an attachment. I don't see any other email
options in One Note. I appreciate your going over the copy options for
me--it helps and I see it in the book.

Since Tools>create Outlook item allows you to create an appointment, task I
would have liked as another feature of its Outlook integration "create an
Outlook folder,"--it would have been a convenience since right now and in
SP1's beta preview--I don't see it. There is probably someplace to suggest
things for MSFT to include in the final version if it's not too late. I
guess you can always send the attachment as email and move that to a folder
and that gets the item classified and stored in Outlook the way you can do
with any mail or other item there if you want it there.

"What is a One Note document?"--just my clumsy way of describing items in
One Note while trying to get used to it.

*Dragging and Dropping from One Note to Other Apps*

Can you show me how to do this? I've tried and I just can't drag and drop
something *from One Note.*

I know you can drag and drop files to One Note, and make it easy by keeping
One Note on top of other applications, but you're supposed to be able to
drag one note "files" *to other Office apps* The One Note tour says:
"it's easy to transfer notes to other documents. Use drag-and-drop to
transfer typed and handwritten notes, graphics, and photos in OneNote 2003
to other programs." I can't figure out how to drag or where or what to grab
from One Note to some other app.

They are similar, but the office one doesn't collect everything the windows
one does and it holds 24. it's kinda fun to open both and watch what happens
when you copy... the office one does office apps and notepad and a few
windows apps, not windows explorer cut/copy. It doesn't pick up the cut/copy
for some programs - for some reason, I'm thinking photoshop, but I might be
forgetful, it was too long ago when I played with both.

The only time I would not use the file, send email option is to send just
one note container - copy and paste into a message would be easier. I also
leave the OneNote as attachment option enabled and delete it when I don't
want to send it. it's easier than adding it back.

(e-mail address removed) is an email alias you can use for suggestions or log
onto the web interface (open the help pane in OneNote using F1 - select
Communities) and file it as a "suggestion". They are going to be monitoring
the suggestion threads and hopefully, the comments added to it will help
make it even better. Only people viewing online can see the "suggestion"
icon, so you might want to say it's marked a suggestion in the message body
or subject so people using a (real) newsreader knows.

I hope this all makes sense, between the early hour and my new glasses,
seeing what I type is hard. <g>

Diane--

All of it makes a lot of sense and thanks for the clarifications--they're
very helpful. I was looking last night for somewhere to make the
suggestions in addition to MS Wish.. I can also shoot a email to some of
the people from Office who come and put on conferences and some other Office
people who I hope can get them a look. I saw this:

the MSFT site's One Note Tour:

they say that you can and I have a placemark in your One Note book's Chapter

applications and the One Note tour says you can. I'm using the One Note SP1
preview now

(you have to uninstall One Note or it won't install unless you ran it on
something like Virtual PC 2004). I know you can drag items into One Note
and I've seen this:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...en-us/odc_on2003_ta/html/odc_ON_ImportAPI.asp

but still can't figure out how to drag *from* One Note.

Dragging is bad, IMHO, as it moves, not copies, the note... but if you want
to drag it, select the text or full note container(s), hold the mouse and
drag - you can only drag to OLE capable apps, like word and outlook, not OE.

If I wanted to send a One Note document to Outlook to store as an
Outlook folder, what would be the best way?

If I wanted to copy/paste the One Note document, would that involve
the *Office Clipboard* distinct from the regular clipboard that can be
viewed from the Control Panel Applet as a Windows power toy?

Is it possible to take a One Note document and drag it into Outlook or
do you have to move it to a new folder in One Note first?

Thanks much,

Chad Harris

Thanks--

And right click dragging and copying would just be an alternative way of
copying the note I suppose, and I forgot about selecting text and dragging
it. Appreciate all your help.

Dragging is bad, IMHO, as it moves, not copies, the note... but if you
want to drag it, select the text or full note container(s), hold the mouse
and drag - you can only drag to OLE capable apps, like word and outlook,
not OE.

Diane--

All of it makes a lot of sense and thanks for the clarifications--they're
very helpful. I was looking last night for somewhere to make the
suggestions in addition to MS Wish.. I can also shoot a email to some
of the people from Office who come and put on conferences and some other
Office people who I hope can get them a look. I saw this:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2004/apr04/04-20OneNote.asp
and these:

http://office.microsoft.com/assista...ID=HA010948391033&CTT=3&Origin=HA010789821033

http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/suggestions.aspx?CTT=98 from the
Crabby Lady's examples here:

*How do you drag from One Note into other Office Apps??? They say you
can and I've tried. I sure must be missing something simple. As I copied
from the MSFT site's One Note Tour:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/onenote/prodinfo/tour/default.mspx

they say that you can and I have a placemark in your One Note book's
Chapter 9 but I can't figure out how to drag "items" from One Note into
other Office applications and the One Note tour says you can. I'm using
the One Note SP1 preview now
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3A-74CA-4113-9392-0DFB092DFA72&displaylang=en
(you have to uninstall One Note or it won't install unless you ran it on
something like Virtual PC 2004). I know you can drag items into One
Note and I've seen this:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...en-us/odc_on2003_ta/html/odc_ON_ImportAPI.asp

but still can't figure out how to drag *from* One Note.

Thanks,

Chad Harris

They are similar, but the office one doesn't collect everything the
windows one does and it holds 24. it's kinda fun to open both and watch
what happens when you copy... the office one does office apps and
notepad and a few windows apps, not windows explorer cut/copy. It
doesn't pick up the cut/copy for some programs - for some reason, I'm
thinking photoshop, but I might be forgetful, it was too long ago when I
played with both.

The only time I would not use the file, send email option is to send
just one note container - copy and paste into a message would be easier.
I also leave the OneNote as attachment option enabled and delete it when
I don't want to send it. it's easier than adding it back.

(e-mail address removed) is an email alias you can use for suggestions or
log onto the web interface (open the help pane in OneNote using F1 -
select Communities) and file it as a "suggestion". They are going to be
monitoring the suggestion threads and hopefully, the comments added to
it will help make it even better. Only people viewing online can see the
"suggestion" icon, so you might want to say it's marked a suggestion in
the message body or subject so people using a (real) newsreader knows.

I hope this all makes sense, between the early hour and my new glasses,
seeing what I type is hard. <g>

Diane--

I was referring to http://www.duxcw.com/faq/win/xp/clip.htm Clipbook
Viewer, and I guess it isn't one of the Powertoys.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
I was just curious if the Office Clipboard is different, and I'm
betting it might be--I'll have to search around for its file.

I have Outlook 2003 so I guess that the built in method for One Note is
going to use OL by default unless you tell me differently. In One Note

File>Send to or clicking email sends the "item" since I'm still getting
them straight to OL mail/wordmail as an attachment. I don't see any
other email options in One Note. I appreciate your going over the
copy options for me--it helps and I see it in the book.

Since Tools>create Outlook item allows you to create an appointment,
task I would have liked as another feature of its Outlook integration
"create an Outlook folder,"--it would have been a convenience since
right now and in SP1's beta preview--I don't see it. There is
probably someplace to suggest things for MSFT to include in the final
version if it's not too late. I guess you can always send the
attachment as email and move that to a folder and that gets the item
classified and stored in Outlook the way you can do with any mail or
other item there if you want it there.

"What is a One Note document?"--just my clumsy way of describing items
in One Note while trying to get used to it.

*Dragging and Dropping from One Note to Other Apps*

Can you show me how to do this? I've tried and I just can't drag and
drop something *from One Note.*

I know you can drag and drop files to One Note, and make it easy by
keeping One Note on top of other applications, but you're supposed to
be able to drag one note "files" *to other Office apps* The One Note
tour says:
"it's easy to transfer notes to other documents. Use drag-and-drop to
transfer typed and handwritten notes, graphics, and photos in OneNote
2003 to other programs." I can't figure out how to drag or where or
what to grab from One Note to some other app.

What is a OneNote document? A note container, a page, a section? To
copy a whole page, control a, control c. To copy one container, click
on the bar at the top of the container to select it and control c. To
select several, but not the entire page, drag the mouse to select
them, then control c. Select all the tabs to copy a whole section,
then control c. you can paste the copied data into word or outlook -
you'll get one large text file either way.

1) I would use the built-in method for email unless I didn't have
Outlook 2003...
2) you can't send a OneNote file to outlook and create an outlook
folder. Best you can do is savei it as an attachment in an outlook
item, but that results in duplicate files.
3) They go to the office clipboard. I'm not familiar with the power
toy, so I can't say what you'll see there.

I'm using MOS 2003/Win XP SP2 RC2.

I'm trying to find out the best way to send a One Note document to
Word and also to send a One Note doc to Outlook to store in an
Outlook folder or to send as Wordmail in Outlook. First, with Word,
I've used (on the One Note toolbar) File>Send to Word. Then if I
wanted to send that document I could use Insert>File>on the Wordmail
toolbar. Is there a better way? Would Send to Mail Recipient be
another way or easier way (from the One Note toolbar?)

If I wanted to send a One Note document to Outlook to store as an
Outlook folder, what would be the best way?

If I wanted to copy/paste the One Note document, would that involve
the *Office Clipboard* distinct from the regular clipboard that can
be viewed from the Control Panel Applet as a Windows power toy?

Is it possible to take a One Note document and drag it into Outlook
or do you have to move it to a new folder in One Note first?

Thanks much,

Chad Harris

typical behavior when dragging between different programs (i.e., word to
OneNote) is when dragging to a new program, the data is copied. This is by
default and you need to hold a key or use cut to delete the text. Select
text in word, drag to ON. Copied by default...

Try it from ON to Word. The note is deleted in ON... sure, ctrl+drag copies,
and Ctrl+Z undeletes, but the default behavior is not what the user expects
because it's not how it works between any other programs.
