I'm intending to sell an outdated notebook and a handful of additional storage devices, and one thing of concern is figuring out the most effective method of common personal data destruction safety. I know that simply erasing files or perhaps even performing a standard re-formatting is not always adequate, given that the information may still be retrieved.

Here has anyone ever used any application that really ensures everything is gone permanently? I came across a data wipe tool that claims it is certified by military standards when it comes to wiping out data so that there is no possibility of recovery. Sounds legit, but prior to giving it a try, I wanted to know whether any of you have tried out similar tools.

What do you typically do with your devices when you plan on selling them or don’t want them anymore? Any advice or particular concerns I should have?
