BETA - Formula question

I have a huge spreadsheet with names of people by last
name,first name in columns by month for the last 3 years.
I want to know how many times over the last year a person
has been entered. Eg. Smith, Joe - how many times his name
is entered without manually counting. Can you help me on
this puzzling question.
