Better Terms Than Folder, Section, and Page

J

Jon Forrest

I'm learning OneNote (without a book, unfortunately).
It took me a little while to internalize what
folders, sections, and pages really mean. If
I was designing OneNote, based on what I know
now (which could be incorrect) I would have
called them drawer, folder, and page respectively.

The terms they're using evolved from the old "5-Section" ring binders that
we all had in school back in...well, a long time ago. :)

I think you're looking at it incorrectly. Think of it as a notebook.. not an
office room. :)
As ben said, the terms are derived from looking at it like it's a notebook.

And for all I know there are no onenote books. So I too have learned it
without a book... and it's fairly simple... It's not a document or letter
writer, so don't treat it like one. It's supposed to be for quick notetaking
and searching. Better than having a pad of paper, or a notebook on your
desk.

Actually there are a few OneNote books. I have a couple of them listed in
the FAQ (see signature below).

No OneNote books? Ah James, those is fighting words.... :)

There are several on the market available from Amazon and other on-line
retailers. Bricks and mortar stores don't see it as a product that they
should carry books for, so the generally don't. Those that do tend to put
them in with business books instead of computer books. While you look for
the books, check out the videos, etc. that Chris H recommends.

All that said, I will recommend you take a look at the book I co-wrote
"Unleash the Power of OneNote". I am biased, but I think it is great - it
was written from the perspective of the user who wants to get more out of
OneNote than is visible at first glance.

Another way to learn OneNote is to take a class. I teach one of those too-
on-line via Eclectic Academy - new session starts Nov. 6th - see
www.onenoteanswers.com for information.

Okay, I see i was wrong... There are onenote books... *not that I see any
use. Unless someone wants to send me one for free, and to look it over ;-)*
I'm pretty good at learning software on my own though. Kathy, I know alot
about onenote, but i wonder what you could teach me. also, I dont see your
class at Eclectic... I see your powerpoint class, but no onenote... but
either way, as of right now I'm too strapped for cash to learn onenote to
it's fullest.

Hi James,
The class is there - it is listed under business classes. Glad you brought
it to my attention though, the person who runs the academy changed the pages
around and it doesn't show on the link page anymore. You can find its
description here:
http://www.eclecticacademy.com/business.htm#onenote

(And for anyone else interested in the class, it costs US$20 for a 6-week
class.)

there are actually several OneNote books out. Do a quick search of
Amazon or your favorite book vendor. You may even recognize the names of
some of the authors as other participants on this group...
