better way for renaming a folder?

Hi,

Thanks for the advise in advance.

Suppose folder A is going to replace all contents in folder B. What will be
some other alternatives other than renaming folder A's name to folder's B
(and folder B's to other name)?

Background information:

We recently upgraded a shopping cart software, and for the safety reason, we
created another folder (folder A) for the upgrade and testing while keep the
original folder (B) intact.

After everything is being completed and pointing database to the new one, we
renamed folder B (original shopping cart) to another name and folder A to
folder B.

The process went through fine and almost immediately switched over without
anyone notice.

But the problem with this approach is - when we renamed folder B to another
name (se. C), all contents inside folder B changed its reference to C. We
wish to retain all references as it is so that it can be used as back up.

In this case, we had to use Find to serach the entire folder (many contents)
and replaced all references of the new folder name (C) to the original one.
This is very time consuming.

So the question is - is there a better approach other than using renaming
for switching contents of the two folders, or if is there a way that can
retain all references intact during renaming?

The software used is FrontPage 2003.

Thanks in advance.

You should have publish a copy current site as a subweb of the current site, did your testing, then
when ready published another copy of the current site as subweb, then publish your tested copy over
the root web.

Hi,

Thanks and if I understood correctly, it means to create a second site (as a
subweb) for the testing purpose and cover the old site over when it is
completed.

It's good but is there another easier way since the site has many content
folders containing different applications and the size is relatively large?

Maybe I should have done the last backup and downloaded the old folder
first, then renamed its name to something else, and after that, renamed the
new folder to the old one's name.

One way or the other you should have create one or more backup copies first.

If the store portion of the site was contained in a single folder, then that folder should have been
a subweb, if support by your web host.

Hi,

Thanks. I have previously asked the same question about the need of a
subweb and also searched the net for similar topics, as far as I've learned,
it really makes no difference for using a sub-web or folder (our host does
support it).

Could you kindly explain for why would you recommend that a subweb is a good
thing for me?

I have no problem for setting up one and we also have other folders for blog
and forum and maybe they can be subwebs as well.

But I just don't know the needs behind it.

Many thanks.

A subweb / subsite can be published independently of the root web, can have separate FP navigation,
shared borders, themes, etc., whereas a folder can not be published independently of the web it is
located in, nor can the folder have a separate FP navigation, shared borders, themes, etc.

Hi,

Thanks for the kind explanations. Guess our site was simple and the main
application was in the shopping cart folder, but now it gets a bit of more
complicated as we have been adding more and more things to it.

It's a good time for us to think about using sub-web instead of just a
folder.

Many thanks again.
