Beware, after installing Office 2008 SP1, the next computer startup can take one hour or more!!!!!!!

Dear friends:

Beware, after installing Office 2008 SP1, the next computer startup
can take one hour or more!!!!!!!

I installed Office 2008 SP1 today without any problem, it took no more
than ten minutes in my MacBookPro. The installer said "Installation
Finished" and I did a shutdown of my computer.

But the next time I started it, when the Finder started, a small
windows called "Microsoft Office for Mac" showed two slow going
horizontal thermometers: one with the title "Upgrading Identity" and
the other with the title "Upgrading messages". And of course, without
any "Cancel" button.

The whole process took more than one hour, almost one hour and a half.
I find incredible that if Microsoft said "Installation Finished", a
one hour and a half process was missing, and during that period of
time, you couldn't use your computer with Ms-Office, and practically
with nothing else. And all of this without any previous warning
message!!!!!!

Is that what Microsoft calls "Customer Care" and "User
Productivity"????

Incredible!!!!!!

Any comment?

Do you perhaps have Entourage set to open automatically when you login
or on launch? This should only happen when you launch Entourage for the
first time after installing--it has to reformat your database. How large
is your identity?

A warning that the next Erage launch will be slow would be good.

After installing, it's always best to restart your computer. You should not
have Entourage set to automatically open. Once you have run Repair
Permissions then open Entourage and let the upgrade process start. It's
quite lengthy, but will show you it's upgrading.

Note: you cannot revert to 12.0.1 from SP1 (12.1.0) once the upgrade has
completed. See my post: Warning! SP1 upgrades Entourage Identity.

Dear Daiya, I don't have Entourage set to start automatically. That
happened immediately after the Finder started to show the desktop
icons. A daemon maybe?

Dear Diane, I don't have Entourage set to start automatically. That

No problems like that here. Maybe you shouldn't save every e-mail that
you receive.

Dear friends, yes I have all my emails defined as "important" from the
last 15 years in my database (6 Gigabytes).

But this database, fully indexed by Spotlight (and backup-ed by Time
Machine) is an outstanding tool and source of information!!!!!

Dear Diane and friends, thank you very much for your help.

I will try to explain the problem I had, now solved, in more detail.
As you know, English is not my native language, so it seems to me that
I am not explaining it very well.

1) Yesterday (Tuesday), half hour before of the end of my working
day, the download process of the SP1 of Office 2008 for Mac (English
Edition) ended OK. I decided to install it, the process took less than
10 minutes, the message "Installation Finished" appeared, and all went
OK. I decided to go home, so I did a shutdown of the machine (a
MacBook Pro) without any problem.

2) Five minutes later, I remembered that I haven't printed an
important PDF document that I needed to bring to my home, so I started
(booting) my computer again. But when the Finder started and the
Desktop Icons appeared, a small window called "Microsoft Office for
Mac" showed two slow going horizontal thermometers: one with the title
"Upgrading Identity" and the other with the title "Upgrading
messages". And of course, without any "Cancel" or "Pause" button.

3) The whole process took almost one hour and a half, and during
that period of time, I couldn't use my computer with Ms-Office, and
practically with nothing else. And all of this without any previous
warning message. Also, please note that there wasn't any "Read Me"
file in the installation package, and that I don't have Entourage (or
any Office application) set to start automatically when my computer
starts.

4) After the "Microsoft Office for Mac" window finished its job
and disappeared, I printed my PDF file (without using any program of
Ms-Office for Mac) and I shut down my computer again without any
problem. Only that I returned home with a delay of one hour and a
half!!!!

5) Today (Wednesday) I started (booting) my computer without any
problem, but it was very, very, slow. Activity Monitor showed a hidden
process called "Microsoft Database Daemon" working very hard and
taking a lot of resources. I waited until this process ended without
using my computer (two hours more!!!!), and the computer recovered its
normal speed. I supposed that this "Microsoft Database Daemon" was
indexing the Entourage database for Spotlight, but I am not sure.

6) After that, I opened a Word Document, an Excel Document and a
Powerpoint Document (sequentially) without any problem. The only
difference was that I needed to re-allow each of the Ms-Office
programs to receive external network connections in the firewall. Why
they do that? I don't know.

7) Finally, I started Entourage and all was OK. The only
difference I noticed, was that I needed to re-enter all the Mail
Account Passwords again. Also, a bug appeared: My Hotmail password is
six characters long, and Entourage displayed an error message saying
that all the Hotmail Passwords needed to be at least of six characters
or more!!!! But, apart of the wrong error message, it accepted the
password as OK.

8) Now, I am working again without any problem.

So, during almost one hour and a half (yesterday) and for two hours
(today), I couldn't use my computer productively, and I don't think
that a 6 Gigabyte Email Database (splitted into many folders) is a
strange situation today.

I find incredible that when Microsoft said "Installation Finished",
two very long processes were missing, and during that period of time,
you couldn't use your computer with Ms-Office, and practically with
nothing else. And all of this behavior without any previous warning
message, or a "Read me" file explanation.

Sorry, I was wrong. Definitively, the Hotmail account stopped to work.
This is a new bug in Entourage.

Normally, when you install, you complete the process. I do agree that a Read
Me should have been provided explaining the upgrade process. If you had read
my blog announcing the update you would have been warned. :)

I'm not sure what in the update triggered Entourage to upgrade when you
turned on your computer, but it's normal for this type of process to lock
you out of other functions on your computer.

When install and updating, caches need to be rebuild and after restarting
this should flush caches. Note it is also recommended that any open
application's fonts could be affected if left open during an update like
this.

The Entourage Help Blog is the best place to find tips and help on
installing. We try to advise you so there are no surprises.

Try reading this and see what you could have avoided.
