BIG problem-little brown diagonal 'pencils' on ALL folderlist icon

P

Hello there!

i am tearing my hair out on a problem (self-inflicted) that started 5 days
ago and i can not continue working on my site (BIG problem!)

The problem is showing on the surface, by ALL the icons in the folder list
of ANY SITE i have put into frontpage, having a small brown 'pencil-like'
diagonal bar (from 7 o'clocl to 1 o'clock) superimposed on top of every icon
of every folder in the folders' lists!

If i make a 'new site' immediately i click to open any folder, up comes this
little pencil thing again. I host with sbi! and their dialogue boxes are
telling me that i have a 'foreign' file in my folders when i upload and i
cannot upload anything! ((i cannot remember the exact words)They do not
support server extensions or ftp or things like that-does this give any clue?)

The problem started when i was making a test navigation bar, just to learn
how to do it, and i had done 'Tools - page options - Authoring tab -
Frontpage and sharepoint technologies - (& in dropdown list)None' which is
what we must do when hosting with sbi!. everything worked beautifully, until
i had to push a bit further and 'just' try putting a link to another website
(of a friend of mine) just to 'see if it worked'. yes, it worked but it also
seemed to 'join' all my websites and my friend's site together!

since wednesday, i have deleted my entire site, i have deleted my friends
site (i am making his as well as mine in fp) and i have deleted an 'example'
site that was on disc included in a 'how to' book for fp. i have uninstalled
and re-installed fp a total of 3 times (have NOT re-installed example site,
named My Garden Co, but this is the last website on frontpage, and i CANNOT
DELETE IT WITH ANYTHING. i choose the option to 'delete this site completely
from existence', but when i go to open a new website, in the one page site,
browse box, sure enough, the My Garden Co is there again, and each time it
has a higher number on than the last time . now it is My Garden Co7.

What i am asking is:

what hornets nest did i unknowingly enter into?

HOW do i get out of it?

if anyone has the answer to this ......well.... my gratitude will extend to
infinity!!
best wishes from pinkpanther

It's not a FrontPage issue, it's a system issue.

Two options to repair it:

Open the computer Control Panel and see if TweakUI is installed.
If so, open it and click the Repair tab. Select the option to Repair Icons

If Windows XP TweakUI will be found at Start > Programs > Power Toys for
Windows XP

If you don't have it, download and install it from here.

hello Steve and many thanks for responding.

i have done what you suggested but there is no change (after i used Tweak to
repair icons, i created an entirely new site, but still, in the browse box,
was the url of the old site with a number 8 after it this time (each time i
create a new site, this old url is already in the browse box, but each time
the number at the end of the url has increased by 1 from the previous site i
created)

That just means FrontPage is telling you the file is OPEN ....

You make a site by doing the following...

http://office.microsoft.com/training/Training.aspx?AssetID=RP011140661033

.... Then you open files within that site ... when you do they have a penciel
tilted to the right perfectly normal....

.... You can see this on the file icons in folder list Alt + F1 ....So ...
pick a file that you opened... see the pencil appear.... then close the file
(file | Close) ... what happens to the icon then? Does it disappear? Or are
you saying it does not disappear?

I get this now and again ... give it a while (and reboot) and they go back
to normal ... sometimes icons that are not even in fp appear (used to happen
all the time when i was using win 98se) ...

I host with sbi! and their dialogue boxes are
telling me that i have a 'foreign' file in my folders when i upload and i
cannot upload anything! ((i cannot remember the exact words)They do not

mmm they don't support fpse or ftp .... i do hope your not paying them
anything in that case!

What do they support? Can u give us an url for the host?

move to a host that has ftp at least!

Try to 'upload' again ... and this time right down what the error message
says..

and I have to ask .. what does your host say?

The problem started when i was making a test navigation bar, just to learn
how to do it, and i had done 'Tools - page options - Authoring tab -

So your friends site is on your hard drive too? .. Is it a subweb or a
folder of your site? What is the domain of your site and your friends site?

The sequential number for web site names is a different issue and has
nothing to do with icons.
Try using a slightly different name.

Thank you soooooo much to all of you for your help!!!

it has mostly been a case of duh!...duh!...duh! .... and paranoia (don't
know if that is how you spell it) about not being able to use Frontpage
because it is too advanced for my capabilities.

you were all so right, and i have just uploaded a page to my server as
EASILY as can be, and although i have lost 4 days , the good bit is that if i
ever do have a REAL problem i know where to come!!

Many thanks again!

from a very grateful miranda

Your welcome (from us all)

Remember to take a deep breath .. and when something is not working ... work
through the tutorials step by step.... every time I have a problem .. and go
back .. I find I've missed something .... works every time.

I don't like the sound of your host though if you can't ftp or fpse
(publish) .... this will harm you down the line ... are you sure your not
ftping?

who is your host?

Tina
