Big Problems Opening Web Document

I have built 2 websites - both craft shops. Both using MS Publisher. The
latest is for a friend and it needs daily updating. After uploading it once
and it somehow getting corrupted I now Save it in 3 places as a backup.
Recently I made changes and updated it - all was fine until I went to open it
up again and after the message box appears stating "Importing Data from HTML"
a message box appears stating that the tables are too big and for me to
change them BUT it will not allow me to get into the document to change it.
Once I have click the only option of OK on this message box it then takes me
to the document which has all it's pages BUT no data on the pages. Then a
ERROR box appears stating do I want to start restart the program and send an
error report to Microsoft.
I need help PLEASE as hours and hours have gone into this document. I have
tried opening all 3 versions of the document and the same happens each time.

You've got me going "huh?" A message that says importing data from html? And
there is no data? You'll have to give me some background on what you have
and what you're doing. How did you create the web publication, what's it
consist of, and how did you create the web. Also mention what version the
web publication was first created in and if you are using Norton AV.

Apologies

I did reply yesterday with a lengthy reply and it seems to have disappeared
off the face of the earth! So here goes again....

I am using MS Pub 2003 Pro and the website document was created using MS Pub
2003 Pro 4 weeks ago. I have never used any other version.

On opening MS Pub 2003 Pro, I choose to open my index file.... it seems as
if it is opening ok.... it comes up with the grey message box in the left
hand bottom corner stating "Importing HTML files" and then seems to progress
until a Publisher message box appears stating something along the lines of
"the table size is too large. You need to change the table properties to
Grow To Fit. Publisher may of locked the table because of this" and then the
only option is to click on "OK". In the background you can see that the
document still has all the pages BUT nothing on the pages (the document is
approx 50 pages long)
On clicking on OK, an error box appears stating that Publisher has
encountered errors.... do you wish to restart.... and then giving the options
to send an error report.
I have sent an error report twice and have not received anything back
advising me of what to do (not sure if this is what happens)

Virus software I have is AVG.

The website consist of a bundle of images in jpeg and some in gif, a few
small tables but lots of pages and hyperlinks.

Hope this gives you more information.... many thanks

You open the htm file huh, well that's not good. Did you not create a .pub
file? Publisher is not an html editor, a web site is created and managed with
a web publication file, the .pub file. As I mention on page -
http://www.publishermvps.com/WebDesign/tabid/29/Default.aspx . The correct
workflow is, create a web publication, save it (.pub), design the pages, when
ready to generate the html files go to File, Publish as web. At that point
Publisher writes all the htm files and image files that make the web site
(this can be done locally or direct to the server). The site files and the
web file (.pub) are separate entities.
So I guess you went to File, Save as, html. Unfortunately that shouldn't be
there. It's a leftover from a flop introduced in version 2002, it doesn't
work very well. (long story). It's supposed to be gone in 2006. I don't have
any experience (and I've been here 5 years ;-) with a customer actually using
that, and then suffering the consequences. But I can try to do something with
it- if you did not create a pub file - if you only did "save as", and you
want to take me up on the offer of me taking a look at it to see if I can get
it to a pub file, then response accordingly and I'll provide instructions.

As for the error reporting, that is very important and so I'm glad you used
it. It will respond back to you with information on how to get a service pack
if it is id'ed as an issue that was corrected in one, otherwise it has
nothing to tell you. But that data is what tells MS something is wrong. And
it's vital that those be sent if the problem is to get fixed because they
prioritize issues based on how many reports of a problem they get.

You are right in thinking that I saved the file as File, Save As, .... html.
I didn't know that this was the incorrect way and now I could kick myself
hugely in both shins!

I would love you to try and assist - just alert me to how you want me to
send the file etc or what you want me to do.

I successfully created a pub file with your site intact.

You will want to access your web server and delete all existing site files
and folders before you publish so that'll you get a good clean upload. If you
need publish directions that's on my site www.publishermvps.com

But before you do a publish I have to strongly recommend you make a
significant change in your new web publication document. Delete the master
pages. A master page is for print publications. I feel strongly that your use
of master pages is what toasted your file(s). I went thru your whole file
looking for all the "gotcha's" I know of that can foul up a web publication
and didn't find any. Then I realized you used master page, and not 1 but 3.

The nav bar for one thing should not be placed on a master page. The nav bar
wizard automatically adds it's object to a page when the page is added to the
document. I've seen nav bars hose up many a pub file when they go wayward.
Nav bar on a master page- that's just asking for trouble.

Other common page objects, like a header logo, should be carried over to
other pages by using the "copy objects from page" option when inserting each
new page. Or otherwise you can just group the page objects and then
copy/paste the group to the new blank page (and then ungroup on the new
page).

Your new pub file seems to be stable. But, as long as you retain those
master pages I think it's a volatile situation. At a minimum I say delete
those master pages. Ideally, if you have time, my recommendation for the best
result is that you create a totally new publisher file. What you do is open a
new blank web publication on one side of your screen and then open the
existing pub file next to it. Then group each page to grab all the page
objects and copy/paste onto the appropriate page in the new file. And repeat
until you have all pages over. And don't create a master page!

Good luck.
