Big Xs in Japanese text when printing vertical text

L

limepi

I'm printing Japanese text and all the newlines are showing up as Xs. The spaces are also showing up as Xs

This happens when the text orientation is vertical and when the font is Hiragino Mincho w3. Horizontal text and Osaka work fine

To see a demonstration of this problem, enter the text "* * *" (asterisks with multiple spaces between them). Change text orientation to vertical, and set the font to Hiragino Mincho W3

Any ideas

Thanks

Sorry, we do not have the Japanese version of Word here to test with. And
you have not provided your Word version and OS version, so we would have
been unable to answer anyway.

Please post the question (with those details) in one of the Japanese groups.
They will ask us if the question is Mac-specific.

Actually I'm using the English version of Word 2004 on 10.3.3. It has been set to Japanese using the 'japanese language register

I'll try the Japanese groups but thought I'd post this info here, if anyone else knows about this

When trying to Save a Word Document as a PDF File, I get each page printed
separately, instead of all together.

This doesn't happen in other Applications such as Appleworks or Text Edit.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Any suggestions?

1. Check for section breaks. Some will split PDFs
2. Grab a utility to glue them back together.
(search uk.comp.sys.mac on google for pdfmerge.)
3. Try changing the 'printer' in the print dialog.

Don't use "any" kind of breaks such a section or Page Breaks
if you need to put a section on another page hit return until the item starts on the
new page. That's what I have found. creating any kind of PDF documents from Word files.

Yeah, understand the problem. I "think" you might be using a DBCS font.
Word 2004 switched to using ATSUI for display rather than QuickDraw. This
gives certain fonts a radically different appearance on screen.

Have you put in the 10.3.4 update yet? Not that I have any information on
what it changed, but I put it in last night and the display seems better.

I will raise a support incident with the developers for you and see what we
get back.

Cheers
