binary transfer with Frontpage extensions?

I will need to upload a file in binary mode to my Frontpage website that is
using the server extensions.

Will I have any problems? If I were to use FTP or a separate FTP software -
I understand that it will corrupt the server extension settings.

You can use FTP as long as you only FTP the FILE and not any of the _VTI
folders. The FrontPage Extensions get corrupted when you FTP those folders
instead of using publish.

OK - so - all the warning I see pasted all over the net are too general? And
I need any file uploaded that is not a part of my website (files to run a
php program) - I can use any ftp program? Searching the net - I get the
inpression extensions and ftp are completely incompatiable!

Correct. We tell people this because they have a habit of FTPing the entire
site (all files and folders) and if you FTP any of the special FrontPage
folders, like _VTI, _derived, _borders etc you'll corrupt the meta data that
makes the FrontPage Extensions work and then your host will have to repair
them. Once you become an advanced user, if you're careful you can use FTP.
For example, if I have a big Access database or large images I may FTP them
to the site since FTP is faster than FrontPage publishing. But I only
upload the FILES. After you do this you can open the live web in FrontPage
and choose Tools, Recalculate Hyperlinks to get all the folders back in
sync.

As a general rule most people shouldn't use FTP but you can if you're
careful.

This is handy, because if you're using Perl scripts or even PHP for example,
you usually need to set CHMOD permissions (Linux servers), and FP doesn't
seem to (easily) allow that, but FTP (cuteFTP for example) programs do.

Great point. WS_FTP also lets you do that.
