Bitmap Images

Is there a source for free bit mapped images that can be
used for command buttons, splash screens, etc. ? There are
of plenty of clipart out there in .wmf format, but I don't
see bitmap images available for use. Am I correct in
assuming that only bit map images can be used on buttons?
